Engr. Dr. Joseph Onah Ukpata is a COREN registered Civil Engineer, Fellow of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Civil Engineers (NICE), and Associate Cost Engineer. He served as Chairman of The Nigerian Society of Engineers, Calabar Branch between 2018 and 2020.
He is a member some international professional Associations, including the Institution of Concrete Technology and Association for Project Management, both of United Kingdom.
Dr Ukpata is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Cross River State, and currently serves as Director of Research and Development / Centre of Excellence of the University. He is the immediate-past Head of Department of the Department of Civil Engineering and former Director of SIWES (Supervised Industrial Works Experience Scheme).
His educational qualifications include:
• HND in Civil/Structural Engineering from the Polytechnic Calabar;
• PGD and MTech Degree in Structural Engineering from Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt;
• MSc in Construction Project Management from the University of Manchester, UK; and
• PhD in Civil Engineering, specialising in Durability of Cements and Concretes from the University of Leeds, UK.
He is currently serving in some NSE and NICE National Committees:
• Member of Admission Committee;
• Member of Nigerian Content Committee; and
• Professional Service Committee of NICE
An ardent scholar, he has published over 30 articles in reputable national and international journals and had made several academic and technical presentations at both local and international fora. He was the First Place Winner for Best Academic Staff Publication, awarded by CODET (Committee of Deans of Engineering and Technology) of Nigerian Universities, during the 2021 COREN Assembly held at Abuja.
He has a wide range of professional experience in engineering design and construction consultancies for buildings, highways and erosion gully remediation. He was involved in consultancy design and supervision for the construction of several urban roads in Calabar, Cross River State between 2007 and 2014. He has also led teams on successful engineering studies and designs for erosion gully remediation projects of the World Bank–Assisted, Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Projects (NEWMAP) and Agro?Processing, Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Improvement Support (APPEALS) Projects.
He belongs to many community service and socio-cultural organisations. He is a Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) of Rotary International and President of Rotary Club of Hill-top, Calabar.
The Directorate is the University's hub for promoting and coordinating research activities in the University. This includes training and motivating research staff, including, attracting, and managing research funds in line with the requirements of research funders. It is also the main Agency of the University for liaison with external research funders.
