2025-11-30Prof. Jacob Agba, Cross River State’s first and only Professor of Mass Communication, has expressed profound gratitude to God for what he described as a journey “from darkness to light.” He made this known on Thursday at the New Café of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) while delivering the University’s 9th Inaugural Lecture. The lecture, titled “From Analogue to Digital Broadcasting: Uncorking the Lacuna in Audience Attention in the Search for Disambiguated Development,” examined the evolution of broadcasting and the critical need to address audience attention gaps in the digital age. Reflecting on his personal journey, Prof. Agba recounted how divine intervention enabled him to attend a special school for visually impaired children in Obudu, Cross River State, in 1972. He noted that the school, founded by the Catholic Church, not only facilitated his early education and integration into mainstream learning but also marked the beginning of his Christian journey. He said: “The school offered me the opportunity to be baptized and I surrendered my life to Jesus Christ, and began a walk with him. He has saved me from all the ugly experiences that plague and ruin many young people, adults and persons living with disabilities. He has lighted my path, and given me hope of eternal life. The step I took then was considered by some as a step for vulnerable people in need of support from the church. But I don't think that as a Professor, I can be counted among vulnerable people today in the true sense of the term! I remain an example and embodiment of someone God has lifted from grass to grace, from nothingness to a pinnacle; from darkness to light. I owe all of my life and all in my life to Him." In his lecture, Prof. Agba emphasized that bridging gaps in audience attention is essential for media relevance, societal development, and institutional sustainability. He explained that individuals, governments, and organizations contribute to this goal by establishing broadcast stations that inform, educate, entertain, and empower audiences. He added that these stations also serve as training grounds for future broadcasters. Prof. Agba paid tribute to several individuals who have supported his academic and personal growth. He expressed deep appreciation for his wife, Lady (Mrs.) Lydia Agba, whom he described as the “Director of Home Affairs.” He noted that together they have nurtured 25 years of a thriving marriage built on communication, mutual understanding, and enduring love. He also commended the Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Prof. Francisca Bassey, for fostering a supportive academic environment and sustaining the momentum of inaugural lectures at the University. A citation presented by the University Orator and former Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Stephen Ochang, highlighted Prof. Agba’s scholarly contributions, which include seven authored or edited books and monographs, two book chapters, and thirty-three articles published in reputable national and international journals. The Vice Chancellor, represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Thomas Ojikpong, presented a memento to Prof. Agba on behalf of the University Management. The event was graced by top University officials, including the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Stella-Maris Okey; the Acting Registrar, Mr. Edim Effiom Ekanem; the University Librarian, Dr. (Mrs.) Victoria Iyishu; the Acting Bursar, Mr. Wilson Anoyom; the Director of Academic Planning, Prof. Hannah Etta; the Dean of Deans, Prof. Simon Ogbeche Udey; as well as distinguished academics from UNICROSS, UNICAL, and other institutions.
