Our History

University of Cross River State also known as UNICROSS is a state-owned tertiary institution with four campuses spread across four Local Government Areas of the state. The University was formerly known as the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH). It was renamed in February of 2021 by a bill passed at Cross River State House of Assembly which was then approved by the former Governor of the State, Benedict Ayade. The change of the tertiary institution's name was to enable the varsity function as a conventional University, which provides the opportunity to offer more professional courses rather focusing on tech-related courses. The present Vice Chancellor of the institution is Prof DAVID ABUA OGAR. The University took back the indigenous name of the state which was held by the University of Cross River State, Uyo now the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria till 1st October 1991 when the Federal government of Nigeria established the University of Uyo as a Federal University after the separation of the Akwa Ibom Region from Cross River State in 1987. The University of Uyo inherited students, staff, academic programmes and the entire facilities of the then University of Cross River State established by Cross River State in 1983. The Office of the Vice-Chancellor, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and the Bursar are all located in the Calabar Campus, considered the main campus of the Institution, which is located in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State in Southern Nigeria. The University was established in 2002 by the then Governor Donald Duke by merging three higher institutions: The Polytechnic of Calabar, The College of Education, and Ibrahim Babangida College of Agriculture. It offers degree courses at undergraduate and post graduate levels. The university currently has campuses in Calabar, Obubra, Ogoja and Okuku.

Prince Bassey Edet Otu was born on 18 October 1959 to the family of Late Eld. & Mrs. Edet Okon Otu of Adiabo in Odukpani Local Government Area of Cross River State. He grew up in his home city of Calabar and in Jos, Plateau State, where his father had been assigned to the mission of the Church of Scotland. He obtained a bachelor's degree in the Faculty of Social Sciences from the University of Calabar. Before entering politics, he was engaged in banking and then in the petroleum sector. Otu was elected a Member of House of Representatives in April 2003 to represent Calabar Municipality/Odukpani Federal Constituency and reelected in April 2007. Within this period (2003-2011), he was Chairman, House Committee on Petroleum (Upstream), Vice Chairman, House Committee on National Population and member of committees on Power, Ministry of Niger Delta, Inter-Parliamentary Relations, Inter-Intra Party Relations, Environment, Water Resources and Defense. In a 2007 interview, he said the ruling by an international court that the Bakassi peninsula belonged to Cameroon was wrong, but that the job now was to resettle displaced relatives of Nigerians and move on. Otu was Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Petroleum Resources (Upstream). In this role, he led work on a draft amendment bill that would reposition the Petroleum Technology Development Fund as a more effective vehicle to develop local content in the oil and gas industry. The Senator, also for effective delivery sponsored the Nigerian Content Development Act, which today has revolutionized the petroleum sector and has put food on the table of many Nigerians. In 2011, Otu was elected as Senator representing Cross River Southern Senatorial District. On arrival in the Senate, he became the Chairman, Senate Committee on Finance and later Chairman, Senate Committee on Banking and other financial Institutions; he was also a member, Committee on Navy, Power, Petroleum and Water Resources. His impact at the Senate was adjudged by many to be till date unprecedented; his name is said to be synonymous with human empowerment and societal development,[citation needed] this led to his being endorsed for re-election by Buhari Youth Organisation. In 2018, Otu was appointed into the board of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) by President Muhammadu Buhari. He is a receiver of several awards, both nationally and internationally. In his words, “I joined politics for service to humanity”. This is evidently true, as his record of empowerment ranging from Award of land documents and financial support to build, car awards, scholarships etc. is yet to be broken. He is happily married to Mrs. Eyoanwan Bassey Otu and the marriage is blessed with children

The company is established by the Cross River University of Technology (CRUTECH), Calabar to tap on her abundant human capital resources in engineering, environmental and urban sciences, accountancy, agricultural extension and education. The company which is a multi-disciplinary integrated firm has brought together the various technical, academic and professional disciplines in the University. The Company has a team of seasoned academics and professionals with considerable expertise in contract administration and supervision, both traditional and modern techniques of manpower training and development, project implementation as well as financial and management consultancy. The core objective of CCSL is to optimise deliverables and ensure maximum client satisfaction, within the limits of available resources. Mr Uket Ewa is the Managing Director and Chief Executive. Until his appointment as the managing director, he lectures in the department of Accountancy of Cross River University of Technology majoring on forensic accounting and corporate governance, investigation and public sector accounting. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1992 from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). He is presently a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), an Associate Member of Certified Fraud Examiners of USA. He graduated from the University of Calabar were he obtained his bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Accounting. He served as the pioneer Bursar of Cross River University of Technology from November 2002 to November 2012. He single headedly prepared the accounting manual of the University and set up the accounting system in operation in the bursary department of the University. He has vast professional experience both in the private and public sectors having worked in the banking, manufacturing and consultancy sectors both in Nigeria and abroad. Architecture: The robust department of Architecture enhances in the University CCSL to provide world class architectural services from feasibility studies, preliminary designs, working drawings, preparation of tender documents, tender analysis, and supervision, to completion and management of projects. Urban Planning and Management: The department of Urban and Regional Planning is equipped with faculty staff to handle various eco-system studies, environmental impact analysis (EIA) and urban planning advisory services. The Company provides urban designs, urban renewal schemes, estate layouts, site plans, Site Reconnaissance surveys, etc. We are also experts in design and construction of hard and soft landscaping. The staff have been involved in various projects in the above fields.
