UNICROSS VC Engages SSANU Executives on Staff Welfare, Resolves to Deepen Dialogue

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), Prof. Francisca Bassey, on Thursday, August 6, 2026, held an interactive meeting with members of the Executive Council of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), UNICROSS Branch, in her office, as part of efforts to promote constructive engagement, strengthen industrial harmony and facilitate the peaceful resolution of issues recently raised by the Association.

The meeting, convened at the instance of the Vice Chancellor, provided an opportunity for Management and the SSANU leadership to discuss matters affecting senior non-academic staff and explore practical ways of addressing them within the framework of the University’s policies, available resources and applicable regulations.

In her extensive engagement with the SSANU executives, Prof. Bassey outlined various initiatives and strides recorded by the current administration, particularly in areas relating to staff welfare, institutional development, improved working conditions and the overall repositioning of the University.

The SSANU representatives, while making observations and contributions on issues of concern to their members, acknowledged that some of the developments and efforts of the University Management had not been sufficiently known to them. They commended Management for the progress recorded and called for more frequent interactions between the University Management and the Association to enhance communication, understanding and collaboration.

Among the issues discussed were staff housing and accommodation, as well as the need to ensure that positions and opportunities designated for non-academic staff are appropriately managed and accessible to qualified personnel.

The SSANU executives also used the opportunity to highlight other concerns affecting their members, while expressing their willingness to continue engaging Management constructively towards finding mutually acceptable solutions.

The Vice Chancellor reaffirmed Management’s commitment to maintaining an open-door policy and ensuring that staff concerns are given due attention. She stressed the importance of continuous dialogue, mutual understanding and peaceful engagement in resolving industrial issues and sustaining a harmonious working environment across the University.

Prof. Bassey further encouraged the SSANU leadership to maintain regular communication with Management, noting that a strong and effective relationship between the University administration and staff unions is essential to achieving the shared goal of building a more productive, stable and progressive institution.

The meeting ended on a positive note, with both sides expressing commitment to sustained dialogue and collaboration in addressing outstanding concerns and advancing the interests of staff and the University.
